There are many options for starting
in the rewarding pastime of beekeeping. The more a person wants
to do themselves later on, the less the cost.
The Bindaree Starter Kit has been
developed because:
1. The protection provided is suitable
for a new starter as they become familiar with handling bees
2. No preparation work is required,
not even painting
3. No maintenance plastic boxes are
married with traditional wooden frames with real beeswax foundation
4. The size of the equipment - the
boxes take 8 frames - is the most common for amateur beekeepers
and is interchangeable with other equipment.
Fully assembled and treated timber
boxes are also available, but they will need to be painted. You
may also wish to make other variations to the basic items listed.

THE BEES
If you live around Canberra, bees
are available in Spring and early Summer. Bees cannot be shipped
so people outside Canberra should investigate local sources. Please
phone or email for advice.
In Canberra, there are beekeepers
who will catch a swarm and put it into your equipment for a modest
fee. Or, Bindaree has a limited number of nucleus colonies available
for $80. A nucleus consists of four frames of bees with a new
laying queen bee. The queen has been bred for high productivity
and gentle nature.
Other necessary equipment like extractors
and hot knives can be hired from Bindaree.
